Markinch Bowling Club
On Tuesday
evening, in the Kirkcaldy & District Triples League, there was an
away fixture against Gallatown B.C. Unfortunately, J.Cameron,
B.Barnes and J.Dewar all lost, giving victory to Gallatown by 7
points to nil. In the Wemyss & District League on Wednesday
afternoon the Seniors League game was against Kennoway B.C. In the
away game there was a defeat for B.Barnes and at Markinch W.Cowan
also lost, giving victory to Kennoway by 5 points to nil. On Friday
evening, Markinch travelled to Methilhill for the Division 1
fixture, hoping to repeat the early season home win. However, there
were defeats for T.Pettigrew (8-21), W.Cowan (12-21) and J.Clark
lost three shots on the last 2 ends for a 12-14 defeat giving
Methilhill victory by 8 points to nil. On Thurday evening, Markinch
started their defence of the Fife Top 10 title with a game against
Freuchie B.C. In the away game, T.Pettigrew won the Single Hand
21-18 and J.Clark won the Fours game 17-8. At Markinch, there was a
28-4 win for C.Falconer in the Triples, but an 18-17 defeat for
B.Bell in the Pairs. The overall result was a win for Markinch and
the next game is on Thursday 8th against Balgonie B.C. It
was Fife Finals day on Saturday afternoon at Leven B.C., with home
interest in the Single Hand and the Fours. In the Single Hand
T.Young faced J.Byron (Crail) and was involved in a close battle.
Tam took an early 5-3 lead and still led 9-7 after 10 ends of play.
He then got stuck on 9 shots, as he struggled with so many “short”
bowls and J.Byron took over to lead 14-9 after 14 ends of play.
However, even trailing 12-17, Tam refused to surrender and fought
back to level the score 17-17 after 19 ends of play. The cheers of
the Markinch support weren’t enough for Tam to get over the
finishing line and J.Byron eventually won 21-17 to take the Fife
Single Hand title. In the Fours game against Strathmiglo B.C.,
J.Daves Jnr, D.Clark, J.Clark and C.Falconer (skip) took an early
5-2 lead after only 3 ends of play, but soon relinquished their lead
with Strathmiglo going in front 16-6 after 10 ends of play. There
was a late surge by Markinch, when they won five of the next six
ends, to go into the last end trailing 13-17, but the gap proved too
much and Strathmiglo won the last end to become Fife Fours
champions. Although they both finished as runners up, T.Young and
J.Clark still have the Scottish Championships to look forward to
when they, along with K.Bunting will represent District 7 in the
Triples competition at Ayr in July. The members will be travelling
west to support them and wish them good luck.
